  • Routing Differences from NV to ID?

I'm comparing the routing between Elko NV and Mt. Home ID.

    NV-225 / ID-51 (200 miles - 5 hours) vs US-93/I-84 (250 miles - 4 hours). Now, that's GPS miles/time, not Google Maps miles/time, which can vary in real-time.

Looks like the big loss of time happens from north of Wild Horse Reservoir along the Owyhee River to the community of Owyhee along NV-225.

For those that have been on that highway, is it that significant of a difference? How about if you're on two-wheels?

All I'm doing at the moment is looking over routing differences. Done the US-93/I-84 route twice; looking for options for the next trip later this summer.

    Thanx!

I suspect it is like riding up 60 from the I-10 towards Yarnell. Two lane road that is posted for 55-65 but is frequently traveled at aggressive speeds that fit the road, visibility, and traffic a bit better.

Street view on Google maps looks very similar.

The Idaho portion is rather straight toward Mt Home along with a big chunk of the Nevada section seems similar. I'm just not exactly certain that there's that much time difference for the distance saved.

Elko seems to have a few nicer spots for lodging, compared to Wells. For my destination in the PNW, Wells/Elko would be the half-way point on a very long day (800 or so...) between home and the PNW (King County, WA). If that route is moto friendly (getting to the Owyhee River around daylight to avoid the critters that might be crossing the road to get to the river) it would certainly be one to consider in August.

It's rather off the beaten path, so not surprised there isn't much in the way of real-world experience available.

When I use Basecamp to look at the routes it shows 225 to be shorter is distance and time. But it still routes to 93. I guess just because of the road. As long as you have the range to make it in one shot I'd sure be tempted to try 225.

Don't really *need* the range, since Owyhee, NV allegedly has gas accommodations. $15 of fuel there would easily get you the range to get to the Mt Home region and more fuel options.

It simply looks like that stretch of road along the river is what's really knocking down the overall average speeds calculated by GPS systems in mapping the route.

For giggles, I'm also looking at the road from Winnemucca (US95) north; might also be a fun route, much like many of the roads in the central and southern part of the state - desolate and speedy. Well, getting to Burns, OR is 220 miles. With a Henry drive, should be possible. Stock drive?

I've not paid strict attention to time...other than riding the 93 seemed to take forever...as you already know it is not an exciting road.

The 225 of course takes more time, but you will see more animals, especially around Bruneau - if you are a birder, take your big eyes (binoculars) and a bird book and you can spend a lot of time around those waterways. If I have no time constraints I enjoy the 225 much more than any of the other options when heading to Boise etc. If you are going to Boise, wandering over from Mt Home area via the 78 to Marsing then northward is a very pleasant ride.
