  • Replacing bearings on a Bushtec

I have a 2007 Quantum GL and I may be replacing the bearings. Has anyone here ever done this?

Never done it myself but replace the bearings with every tire change.

As I understand it, Bushtec uses an inner and outer ball bearing with a spacer in between them, similar to the front wheel on the Wing, but single rather than a double bearing.
The thing I am told to watch for is that the spacer is the correct length so that the bearings seat in their bores and the spacer contacting both inner races and not loose . Apparently there were some where the spacer is a bit short and when the axel nut is tightened, it will put the bearings in a bind.

I emailed Bushtec last week, no reply. Unusual.

I have changed them, absolutely an easy job. No need to change them with every tire change, some will last 100,000 miles. There are four (2 each side) just like the goldwing front wheel. I just looked at the manual, it says to put a finger in and spin it, if it feels rough then change it. That is how I do it. They have a manual online. 3 of mine have about 40K on them

The only reason I am concerned, is on my last road trip pulling the trailer I could hear a slight sound that I can only attribute to the trailer. Almost like a roaring sound.

I have contacted Bushtec twice, once by email and once on their online form. No response.

I would think that if a wheel bearing were bad enough to hear from your position on the bike, that it would be obvious just by spinning the wheel.
I wonder if you were maybe hearing exhaust or rear tire noise bouncing off of the trailer?

Possible. I am removing the wheels tomorrow and do the spin test.

Lift the trailer up on one side and spin the wheel -if it's Loose or wobbles or makes noise - then Replace the bearing -Repeat on other side.

Did the spin test. They both make a little noise when spinning. I have ordered new bearings, tires and tubes.

Did you order from Bushtec? What was the cost if you don't mind me asking?
