  • Trailers, Hitches, and Warranty Service coverage

    Esteemed Members,

I am about to purchase one of these Honda Goldwings, 2018+. Cruiseman's Rivco hitch and Bushtec trailer and all the rest of the Forum's inspiration has led me to decide it is sound to install a hitch and wiring....better to have it and not use it, or use it infrequently than want to use but not be prepared. I intend to have the hitch and harness installed by the dealer as part of the vehicle purchase from the dealer.

What have been your experiences with hitches, trailering, and dealer service/warranty coverage? I understand there is the Magnusson-Moss Act regarding aftermarket accessories. The Owner's Manual states that the motorcycle is not designed to pull a trailer. So, what experiences have you all had taking your Ride to the Shop for warranty work? Has the shop come out and said, "Oh! You have a hitch...we can't/won't cover it." or "You have a hitch...we're voiding your Motorcycle warranty." or no comments, normal coverage of warranty issues, just as if the hitch was a Grip Puppy or a License Plate bracket?

Better to be Forearmed and Forewarned my friends. Thank you for your input.

I have a hitch on my '08 and never had an issue with warranty coverage. They would have to prove that the hitch caused the problem. Now, if you have a transmission or final drive problem they may try denying the warranty claim. Any other failure it would be a real stretch though.

Actually. I not only run a Safe tire. But I have a trailer hitch on my bike.

No one at the two different dealers or Honda Rep, said a word

When they changed the ACG (Primary Driven Gear) at the first dealer.

Or when they rebuilt the first trans, or gave me a new engine when the tranny blew up the cases the second time.

If Honda needed an excuse to deny any of my warranty claims .
I think I gave it to them a few on a platter. wouldn't you say? lol

A Harley owner friend of mine stressed to me the importance of getting a sense of the warranty experience for those with trailers and Goldwings. My initial thought in reply to his concern was to say, "But it's a Honda, I'll never need Engine/Trans warranty work!" but I thought better of it.
I'll keep an eye on this post for more stories but I will be getting the Rivco hitch and required harnesses installed right from the dealer.
Thank you all for your current and future replies. Except the Forrest Gump pic, Rocky.
