  • Honda Brake Recall

I'm the original owner of a 2006 goldwing that had the original brake recall done without any issues or repairs needed. I've converted to a roadsmith trike after the original recall. Just yesterday, I got the second recal notice from Honda. I'll call my dealer tomorrow but I'd like to have as much info as I can...with that said, does this need to be done on the trike or is it for two wheels only?

    Google "honda gl1800 brake recall"
You should get about 25,000 choices.

I dunno, with Road Smith I guess you will have to speak with whomever installed your kit to find out how they set it up. Used to linked brakes on that brand were retained with use of the rear to the front, but not front to rear. All of that may have changed as I do not keep up with them all.

Not related but someone asked one time and I did not know and this is in regards to MotorTrike only. Some complain of rear brake pedal fall, or mushy pedal when the Trike is first started or it sits for a day or so. Out you go and as you put your foot on the rear pedal the first time it is a soft pedal and once pumped it becomes solid and works normally. Some spend many dollars trying to resolve this and it never goes away.

It will not go away and it is not a concern. The brake system now serves two rear larger caliper and the hydraulic pistons in the calipers simply retract more than what all are used to so it gives a soft first touch pedal. If the Trike sits for half a day or so the caliper pistons retract enough that the extra distance traveled to actuate against the rotor gives the impression the pedal is soft, when in fact all of this is normal.

Just a rule of how it is I have learned since I now own a MotorTrike and the light bulb did come on about that.

Kit: a friend just had the Motor Trike Razor installation and had the pedal you describe. We did the Rocky bleed and that fixed the soft feel on first push of pedal.

From what I read in my notice, they (Honda) have not come up with "what" they plan to replace the "defect" with. The issue is on a two wheeler the rear brake pads are "dragging." The first time, as you know, they replaced the rear master cylinder. As I read my notice, Honda just wants to give all of us a heads up that they are working on something (IE: Legal Talk). While I do not believe "we" as Trikers are having this problem due to the change in our braking, I would suggest that what ever does come down the pike, that "we" take advantage of it and change out the part(s). Unless by having our bikes Triked, "they" were done away with as part of the conversion. Just my 2 cents.

I received my recall letter for my 12 today. Honda says to check your brakes before you ride, by applying them 5 times then spin the wheel or push the bike to see if the brakes drag.
There is nothing the dealer can do now other than do the same check. Honda will send out another letter when they figure out how to fix this...

Yes, I did look somewhere, I looked here for someone with experience with the recall and a trike conversion. Instead of being a smart ass you could have just answered my question or simply done nothing. But hey, thanks for the attempt.

To those that actually did answer my question, THANK YOU!

My 2012 was not listed in the VIN recall. Wonder why some are and some aren't? Did they have different vendors?

I have yet to receive any notification from Honda for my 2012. Bike has not shown any lock up tendencies. Only info I have received are from this Forum or that other one.

To my knowledge, the Roadsmith and any other trike with de-linked braking system is not subject to recall as we do not use the secondary master cylinder any longer. The kits that retained the original Honda linked system ARE subject to the recall.
