  • Tail of the Dragon.... Finally

After years of reading the stories and seeing everyone else's pics, I finally had my opportunity. Rode in from Maggie Valley through off and on heavy showers. The sun finally broke as we arrived at Deals Gap. What an awesome experience....very little traffic and intermittent wet roads. I'll be back!

Good for you. Be sure to check the Killboy site to look for your pictures of the ride. Ride safe.

It's a fun road, but I avoid it on weekends and holidays. It seems like there are way too many riders trying to prove somthing on those days.

Falme Suit On- I've ridden the dragon a couple times and have no desire to return. For the most part, it's full of idiots that think they're on their own personal race track. While there are several that can handle a bike like a pro on a race track, the dragon is not the place to show those skills. Way to many people riding the dragon that are in over their heads...

We are on our way there now and just noticed that the wheels through time museum is close. Guess we will do that as well. Will then head up the BRP towards West Virginia.

Captain no need, in my humble opinion, to get dressed up. Your points are sure valid and everyone that goes to the area needs to know that like many things, there are folks who get in over their head. Those 11 miles and 318 turns just gives "us" a higher concentrate of them at times to deal with and be ready for. LOL I have run that road a few times now and just recently took the new girl through and really could appreciate my Hannigan. This reminds me that I need to go to the Killboy site and order my new pictures of the big red girl rolling through. Just hope that those three sports bikes that were in my way are not in the pictures. LOL

While there are many treasures in the area to ride, this stretch of road is the one that once ridden you can get the patch, and a great deal more, that says "yeah, I did it." I keep telling myself that each time I am in the area that I don't "need too," but then before I know it, there I am. Maybe it is because it's somehow on the way to the fantastic Bakery in Telico Plains? That must be it.

To those heading that way, be mind full, yet enjoy your ride and don't forget the tee-shirt . . . . . . . or the Bakery.

Rick, make sure you see the Wheels Through Time Museum. It will take you the better part of a day to see it all.

Agree with the comments. We were very fortunate as we were able to plan a week day run. The traffic was almost non existent. No one on our tail or us on theirs. About 75 bikes were parked down at Deals Gap just hanging out. We left with a great experience. Tried to get a snack in Tellico but they refused us service.....a lot of angry yelling that sounded like last guy on a red trike ate all their pastries. Made a profiling comment saying we are probably related to those Tres Hannimigos.... ;-)

Ken, you're a hoot. Happy that you and Martha got to spend some quality time in that area. Hope when it's time to head back home, that you arrive safely with a bunch of memories. Glad that Judy and I got to meet you both at the Roadkill. Bruce

4C, I cann't believe the Hannimaigos would cause trouble although, I've only met them a few times.

Thanks ,Bruce. We left NC yesterday afternoon and made it to Tuscaloosa for the night. Back on the road and stopped for lunch somewhere in MS. We should arrive home about midnight. Hey Pizza Man.... I can relate to what you're saying, those three look harmless, but trouble travels in packs. As I monitor the CB for road conditions, the truckers are referencing 3 trikers that eat all the cookies at the good rest stops. They may have a bounty on them?
