  • Final Drive needs replaced

So, about 4 years ago, I was given a GL1800 final drive, including rotor, caliper, drive shaft, swing arm, the whole shootin' match. It had about 10 miles on it from a trike conversion. My 2008 wing was much newer then, so I tucked it away for later. Well, now it's later My 2008 has about 70,000 miles, and I have changed the final drive oil regularly (every other oil change). Just changed it last weekend, and noticed a large amount silver metal, even adds a sheen to the oil, which was also very dirty.

So, I thought I would go ahead and replace it with the unit I have "on the shelf". The issue is, that I have been storing the spare unit in the attic of my outbuilding, and living near Cleveland Ohio, that attic can get very hot in the summer, and very cold in the winter. Should I be concerned about the spare drive being stored in these conditions, perhaps the shaft seal failing, etc?? I will likely swap the drive shaft as well, since I am "in there", and I have one. Just want to make sure that my poor choice of storage locations did not cause any issues with the parts.

    Thanks,
    Tom

I have no idea what the right answer is, but if you kept your bike under a covered awning and it kept going through those weather changes without any miles, wouldn't it be ok? If so, wouldn't this one? Just thinking it through until someone with knowledge stumbles along.

If your Wing is like mine it is housed in a unheated/cooled shop so the one you have stored sees the same temps that the one on the bike does?

My final failed about a month ago with 92k. Oil changed every 10k miles and I never noticed anything in the oil. On mine, the ball spacer ring broke allowing the balls to move to one side and cut the seal out. Dumped the oil all over the rear end. I wouldn't worry about the stored unit, Clean it up and put new oil in then go ride.

I had one stored in similar conditions that I eventually installed on my 05 and it never gave me any trouble.
Change the oil in it and go ride.

Now if the caliper has been sitting with the inlet open, I might be concerned about it. Even if it were capped off, I would flush it out thoroughly or just use your existing caliper.
