  • GL1500: Rocky anyone ECM 90 GL1500SE

Does anyone know where to find part number on a ecm for a 90 GL1500SE and what years will work. Guy has one on ebay for a 90 but he says it want work on SE because they all cary different part numbers. Cant seem to find it in the parts breakdown to cross reference part numbers. Think we have one bad want run in gear and we have checked the whole wiring system all switches and ect. Starts and runs great in n but as soon as you put it in gear it shuts down.

Remove the side stand switch and see if the Tang is still there and not bent/broken. This will make the bike die in gear.

The switch can still be bad if the tang isn't the fault. Try jumping the wires to see if it's the switch?.

If the ECM was bad it wouldn't run great.

And there is a Neutral Safety Switch that the Clutch Switch will override to allow starting in gear with the Clutch pulled in. So check both, the Side Stand Switch and Neutral Safety Switch. Both need to be checked and you can jump both.

One more thing, if the Neutral Light is not coming on, with the bike running. Pull out on the Reverse handle and slam it down real hard. See if that makes the Neutral light come on, this switch is known to stick as well. I betting it is one or the other, the Side Stand Switch like Rockys posted or the Neutral Safety Switch. Not the ECM.

Rick we have hard wired around the side stand switch the neutral light is on have hard wired around the clutch switch and Techdude2000 had been on the phone for hours and everyone is at a dead end why we think it may be the ecm Stopped at a gas station but kick stand down and filled up started the bike raised kick stand put in gear and it dies. Even took the green white wire at the ecm which is a ground for the circuit and still nothing. Runs great in neutral but as soon as you put it in gear it dies. Need to find part number for the ecm we believe is is something to do with the ground circuit for the ecm start system. We just don't know all wires have been check all connections unplugged cleaned and put back together just don't know.

For some time the neutral light would burn dim when in gear and going down the road but when put in neutral light was bright like it should be makes us believe we have a ground problem somewhere but everything checked good except the ground thru the ecm When you hard wire around the clutch switch it will turn over but not fire with kick stand up and in gear

Check for a pinched wire from the Side stand switch connector to the bike. (Not from the side stand switch itself)

Yea, a pinched wire as Rocky is eluding to will give you fits. But the Neutral Safety Switch down behind the oil filter is also a switch you will have to jump around. It tells the ECM that the bike is in Neutral, and the Clutch Switch will over ride it to tell the ECM it is ok to Start and run. So even if you have the Clutch Switch jumped, you still have to check the Neutral Safety Switch as it could be bad, loose or a wire messed up and it is telling the ECM that it is in gear, even though you have the clutch pulled in or the clutch switched jumped, when you go to put it in gear.

You would think that if the Clutch Switch is jumped around, that it would override the Neutral Safety Switch, but I would check it out and jump around it as well. Strange things can happen through these safety switches.

Brother has checked continuity all wires and plugs, does anyone have a site that shows the OME ECU so I can compare part numbers can't see Honda having different ECU for the same year different model but that is what we were told. Guy on Ebay has one for a 90 but says it want work on a SE

Just my two cents, I do not think it is the ECU, it would not run if it was. Something is still messed up with the wires, or improperly jumped and it is doing what it is told to do as it is put into gear.

Something has to send a signal to kill the ignition, and that something is one of the safety switches , somewhere, somehow or possibly a direct short to ground.

                  What about that reverse switch??

I was doing some digging around and found this. (Read post 16) http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/...ut-gear-2.html

Rocky we checked the wiring for pinch what we are going to do next is the side stand switch has 4 wires coming to it, two or for the light using the greed wire as ground the other is for the safety will keep it from running in gear using the same green wire as a common ground. Now a green white wire serving as a ground comes from the ECM to the switch thru the switch to the green wire to ground. Condunity has been checked but it would read ok if only one wire was in tack in the wire so when we can we are going to cut the green white wire and splice a good wire iin its place and see if something there is wrong. The green wire has to be good or the lite wouldn't burn. We are just throwing darts right now hoping we will find it. When we find it we will realize how simple its was and how stupid we were
