  • Honda Trip Planner- Full Release

Sorry if this is a repost, but I nearly suffered a stroke tonight when I discovered Honda finally finished up the Trip Planner site.

I just tried using it. Entered my home address. It cannot locate it. So, either my home address does not exist, or this is still an inferior product.

Pretty bad when I can break it in under 5 minutes.

It worked for me as a basic route planner, but those of us with older Garmins might not benefit much.

It DID import a .gpx that I had built in MapSource (which I have to use for my StreetPilot 2720's) (1st test). However, going the other way MapSource WOULD NOT import a .gpx exported from Honda Trip Planner just now (2nd test); even when it was a MapSource file that I had imported into the planner, added one stop and exported it back to the computer (3rd test). I was going to try it with Garmin's newer Base Camp (which is not compatible with the 2720) but I don't have a working program. (This would be a good experiment for someone else.)

Looks like I might as well stay with Google Maps for quick route planning and my MS Streets and Trips 2013 for detailing overnight stops. Then I'll build it in MapSource to transfer to the device. Maybe when the 2720's finally bite the dust this will be useful.

Updated to add that I exported a .gpx from MS S&T 2013 and the Trip Planner would not import it (4th test).

(I'm not poopooing the site, just identifying left/right capabilities.)

Actually, it works great for me. Not finding an address is a Google issue not Honda code so much I would think.Only glitch I found is exporting a file does not save with a .gpx extension. Just had to rename. Everything else is a snap. The Honda navigation gods have finally smiled. Only took two years...

Won't work with a 2010 Goldwing GPS alas.

This was posted about elsewhere. GPS Visualizer is an online utility that creates maps and profiles from geographic data. It is free and easy to use, yet powerful and extremely customizable. Input can be in the form of GPS data (tracks and waypoints), driving routes, street addresses, or simple coordinates. Use it to see where you've been, plan where you're going, or quickly visualize geographic data (scientific observations, events, business locations, customers, real estate, geotagged photos, etc.).

In other words, it converts .gpx files to .gpd's (many formats of each) like our MapSource uses. It does work, however if you don't put in actual waypoints the planned route kinda falls apart. It is a big step forward.

Honda Trip Planner is still not very capable. Several examples were mentioned above. My primary complaint is that you cannot drag and drop to modify a route. Very big shortcoming.

A much better online trip planning application is available at www.tourstart.org (you should copy and paste this URL into your browser)
This is an awesome site with great capabilities. It will let you plan and modify your route, either by entering a stop or using drag and drop. It does and excellent job of transferring a route to my Garmin 550. Take a look, you might like it as much as I do.

Oh, by the way, HTP was killed off earlier this week.

Ahhhh...I bet I know what happened!

A bit of searching ran across this:

I'ver seen this in a couple of other applications where the use of Google Map technology has been used.

Honda, or the developer, or whoever, just no longer wants to pay the bill for each individual call to render a Google Map on the screen. This was the same reason Spotwalla switched to Open Source map data several months ago.

No - it's gone, it's never coming back. I'd suspect that the Harley version may suffer a similar fate in the future also.

Better learn a different tool to do the work, I'm afraid.

I use BaseCamp. Not perfect, but it has always worked in 90% of the cases.
