  • 2012+ Changing Out Antennas on 2012

I would like to get rid of the two long antennas and put on shorter versions. I do not have a CB but the antenna is there. It would be nice if I could get some like on the F6B but I am not sure the mount is the same. I did find shorter ones but they only fit up to 2010 models so the threads must be different. I bought a couple from auto parts store but the three interchangeable studs will not fit. Has anyone done this or have any ideas?

Nobody has ever changed out the antennas? Maybe I should market the new set up when I figure it out. :D

It says write something here so I will...Search via your Internet engine: 2012 gl1800 antennas Look at what pops up. Several are offered in different lengths.

Sometimes shorter isn't better as far as signal reception. If you're transmitting (I see you don't have a CB) then longer is often better. Same for a good ground plane (metal plate in trunk, wires, good contact to the bike's frame), which is the other half of the antenna system.

The F6B antenna is minimal in performance being as short as it is (mine is at least). To test, grab your radio antenna while listening to AM, FM, or CB. If it improves the signal the antenna is typically too short or the ground plane insufficient.

I know a guy near you that used to sell K40 antennas. It was a quick swap out, with either quick release, or fold down option. He even tuned them for the SWR. Last I heard he had a few sets left, and when they were gone, they were gone. If you PM me, I'll see if I can find his info. He was located in Orange. Price was very reasonable. I had them on my 06:

I ended up going this route. Short antenna from auto parts store with a thread adapter and I have been told by others who have done this that the radio reception is just as good as the big long stock antenna. I will find out for myself this weekend. I do not use or have a CB so that is not an issue for me. Hard to see both of the antennas but they are there.

Looks good! Do you have the same on the right hand side? It can't tell. If that gets you the reception you need, it serves it's purpose, and looks good.

Both sides and only the right hand one works for the radio and this weekend I will give it a reception test. I am told it works just fine.
