  • Earbuds & J&M Headsets

I use the J&M headsets on my '08 GW and my wife continues to have complaints with the headset speakers. We've experimented with earplugs to reduce the ambient wind noise and will install Mic Mutes this week.

My question... is there any type of adapter or conversion that will allow the use of our current J&M headset microphone and plug in personal earbuds in?

Why not contact J&M and see what they have to say? From all the research I have done they seem to have a pretty good CS crew. I am still uncertain what style or brand to get for my wife and I. We don't care much for music but it would be nice to be able to talk to each other easier than what we do now.

If you find a positive answer to this, please post it. I'd love to get a set of ear buds and mic that would plug into the GW connector without having to replace my OEM system.

I don't know if J&M does, but Edsets has a plug for ear buds built into their system. I have used it and it is a huge improvement!

EdSets also offers an adapter that goes in-line that allows you to use earbuds. You can see the link for it on their home page. I use one, and it does great.

I emailed EdSets and this is the reply.... BTW, nice to see a personal response from the owner. "Yes, you can order the EA-55 adapter. It is under Universal Adapters on the main page at Edsets.com. Ed"

I just hope they get to to me before COB Friday - paid the extra for Express shipping.

The EdSet adapter showed up today. It plugged inline with the helmet plug. Being able to plug a decent pair of earbuds in has made me take the volume down from ~20 to 12-14. It's great!

MidMoWing - thanks for the tip!!

I agree, love wearing noise isolating ear buds plugged into my Ed-Sets vs using their speakers. I ride with the shield up on a Shoei Quest and at interstate speeds the ear buds sound great. Go by any place (drug store) that sells ear buds.......look for the ones called noise isolating and get a set of those. The main difference is they have the various sizes of ear bud diameters so you get the right fit. These can be purchased for less than $15. They seem to do a great job of reducing the wind noise and the music quality is like sitting in your living room. Don't get the in-line speaker type ear buds.....you can still talk on your Ed-Set mic.

Now here is the real deal about what I know about real noise isolating ear buds. They cost hundreds of dollars and emit a sound frequency that negates the incoming sounds. I have read some good reviews.

I think that's for the Elite series...the Performance Series doesn't have that type of cord available, I don't think.

Road today for the first time with the EdSet adapter and the wife. She's always commenting that I keep the volume too high for her. Where I was able to drop from ~19 to ~13 using internal earbuds for myself, we both found the volume perfect And she heard no noticeable difference in my mic volume. On top of that, I just realized my ears are ringing a lot less than usual from not having to blast the volume to hear it (even with my tinnitus).
