  • Checked out the Can-Am Spyder RT today

I happened to be at a Yamaha/Can-Am dealer getting some bearings installed and had some time to kill. So, I had time to check out the new Spyder RT. I was pretty impressed over all. The seating position is much more relaxed than I remembered. I love the trunk in the front with the included luggage, very nice. The quality of workmanship appears to be somewhat better than the Goldwing, except that the paint finish was not any better. Still, a lot of orange peel. But, saddlebag doors and trunk lids shut with confidence. An interesting trike for sure.

You have to ride it like an ATV as it doesn't lean like a MC. When I test rode one I tested its handling and almost threw myself off the bike on the first high speed corner. Then I started riding it like my sports quad and the Spyder can really corner well.

I like MCs though and leaning in a corner...

The exciting part about a spyder is its fly-by-wire, computer controlled steering. Little software bugs in the programming will allow the spyder to steer in the opposite direction of where you want it to go.

Last year my wife and I decided to go take a Spyder RT for a test ride. We had carefuly studied all the info online, and in writing, and "thought" we were prepared for the experience. HA !
To be contrary to my normal self...I will make this a short story.....

We both hated the ride experience on the Can-Am Spyder RT. My wife rides her own bikes, is pretty good at it, and when she first rode the RT, while I was ahead of her on my F6B, she was quite upset about how it handled the road. We stopped...I took the RT for a ride, and confirmed what she was saying. This was a new 2013 model, and they "said" that the ball joints had already been replaced under warranty, as part of a recall, due to changes to the front end of the '13 models, compared to the '12 models. This was a NEW RT...with about 20 miles on it.

I will give Can-Am one more try...just to be fair with them, and I will take one more out for a longer ride, and see if I have the same experience. But, just like azsandrider, I like to lean a bike too, so it appears a Spyder RT is not in our futures.

The new 3 cylinders Spyders are different from the rotax v-twins. They cruise at almost the same rpm as a wing. If youre not a trike person or have never driven a trike most dont like the handling. For a factory reverse trike with all of the options ,the new Spyders ride nice and handle nice but oh that new price.

Spyders are nice but like all trikes, not for real MC riders.

I know there are those who have medical problems or injuries that prohibit them from riding a MC so a trike is their only option and I don't mean they are not real MC riders, IF they would be riding a 2 wheeled MC if they could.

From my own Experience - I never had a tricycle as a child and I won't have one ever as an adult -be it a trike -can-am or snow mobile!

Yes, I said that too, once upon a time. You get to the age you either ride or you don't, after 46 years on two wheels, I made the decision to ride on three rather than give it up. Those that say that trike riders are not "real" m/c riders, well that's just not true.
