  • Thinking about a second bike

I love my 2012 Goldwing, but am looking for a smaller bike for 'round town riding. I am thinking something in the 650 to 1000 cc range. I am intrigued by the dual-purpose bikes. Any suggestions? What do you guys/gals own?

Love Corvettes (C5) and love the Goldwing

If i were looking for an around town bike in the 600cc size range, there would be no doubt that I'd bring home a Suzuki Burgman.

I have also thought about dual sports, but being vertically challenged, (short) they're not the best fit for me. But the new Indian Scout has really caught my eye.
It's probably a good thing that I am out of room in the garage!

I am a big fan of the scooters also, I would like to see one in my future. My goto bike is my KLR (2007 "last of the legends") a no frills easy to ride mc, the only drawback is the seat height! not sure but I think around 36?" they can be lowered quite easily, (mine is) . There are many "Around town" bikes on the market, should be fun looking for one, a great problem to have. jmop

What year is it? I'm guessing somewhere in the 70's.

If you are really serious about a Dual Sport bike, you should check out the KTM line before making a final decision. The KTM Adventure, Adventure - R or Super Adventure are all very capable machines for touring, having fun in the twisties or going off-road. These three bikes have gobs of horsepower!

The Suzuki V-Stroms (650cc or 1,000cc) are also great bikes that you should consider if interested in a Dual Sport. They are also very capable bikes that have proven themselves to be very reliable.

Here's my second bike -- 1983 GS850 GL - rescued and restored with about 35,000 miles on it now.

John, I would have to say that a Suzuki V-Strom 650....or the Suzuki Burgman 650...are the best bikes for a 2nd bike...local running around bike...when you already own a Wing.

I have owned a '04 Burgman 650, and thought it was great. It will run along at 100 mph all day long. It has great storage, is very easy to handle, good for people that are vertically challenged, and is as reliable as a Goldwing 1800.

The V-Strom 650 is my next adventure bike. It is the Swiss-Army knife of all motorcycles, and is as reliable as a Goldwing 1800.

Both of these bikes are readily available as used bikes, as the web is loaded with used ones for sale. Either one can be bought for $ 5K or less, used...which is what you want as a 2nd bike.

I have a Sportster 1200- not sure if I would choose that or somethimg fuel-injected for 'round town- old carberetted '93 loves to run, bit not always smoothest low speed ride. Love bscarpenter's BMW, but intrigued with the idiea of a lighter 650 like you're thinking

Suzuki just released info about a newly re-designed 650 V-strom....

                      Link: http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/639/19...irst-Look.aspx

The newer V-strom comes with anti-lock brakes, which you will really want if you plan to ride a lot in town.

You might want to check into that...or do a search and find a good, used Suzuki DR350. I have one and have an inseam of 29", no problems touching the ground. Light weight for dirt roads & powerful enough to ride on the highway.

This is what I have for my off road fun. Mine is the 530, street legal and a blast off road.

Can also be switched over to do this type of riding.

Nice bike, but I think the original poster was really interested in more street riding with the thought of dirt road adventures....

Well a few of us have more than ride. Some have a shed full.
Take your time looking around and test ride some.
Some are more fun than others.

I just bought me a 2013 Yamaha Stryker. Nice layed back cruiser with plenty of get up and go. Had thought about the Burgman, but like the Stryker better. Got to do some mods. Seat not worth a flip and will be adding a windshield to it. Gotten spoiled over the years and like the windshield.
