Does this forum work the same way as the forum that most of us came from? If the first post in a thread is deleted, is the entire thread deleted too? Just wondering...

Yes, if the original post is deleted (the topic), then the entire thread gets deleted, as they are tied to that post.
If you start a thread and wish to delete your post, but leave the thread in tact, you should just EDIT your post and remove whatever it is you want deleted rather than deleting the post.
