  • Off Topic Discussion Suggestion

Suggestion...if possible; make it so a new member has to post a number of MC related topics or comments before allowing access to the Off Topic Discusion...I vote for 100 or 50 posts, but at least 25...

That will keep the trolls at least MC & GW related trolls...

That is a really great suggestion. Now, if I can only figure out how to do it!

Actually, we could do it. We already prevent non-members and members not-logged in from viewing Off-Topic.

I would like to hear some other member thoughts on this. I personally think it is a great idea. Currently, an "Active Member" is one with at least 30 days on the site and 25 posts.

There are a number of "members" who have never posted as well. I suspect they are ghost members and wonder why they joined up at all. Maybee a compulsory post or 2 upon joining or within a few days or membership be deleted and that the identifiers are added to the ignore / spam filter.

Furthermore, for example there are 44 or so "member user names" in the 1st 10 pages who have never posted.
Do we have about 400 ghost members??

I'm I guess one of those ghost members, I was on another board looking for a meckinic down south of me who is kicked off another board because he called bull-shift on another member and the super moderator didn't like it I guess. This board was mentioned a while back and I joined. Ol puter took a dump and lost all information. Moh58 finally reminded me of this site, thanks Matt.

There could be a lot of members who came here early one to "stake out" their user name. I know there are lot of members who are waiting to make the leap from another board to over here. Since we are a new board (relatively), there are a lot of people who are waiting to see what happens here. Also, there are a lot of people who visit the forums and never post.

Personally I really like the idea of preventing newcomers from posting in the Off Topic Board until a certain number of posts is reached. Fifty sounds about right to me. Great idea azsandrider.

Thing is, at this point there are those over there who already have over fifty posts on the off-topic board. Nary a post on any of the motorcycle forums.

Orangecrate you have a valid point. A rule of this nature won't catch 100% of those who would join the forum just to stir up trouble in the OTD but it should dissuade a lot of them from doing so. Nothing is going to work all the time. I like the OTD and think it should stay.

I don't agree with the request. As stated a few times above, this board is new and some are here just checking it out.

Your suggestion is moving towards 'the other board.'

Cruiseman and 'The GL Forum' mods can discipline/kill posts from trolls. It should be on an individual basis. Yes, that is asking a lot from those two guys, but they WANTED to BUILD this site. They need to manage it.

What is to stop someone from posting 10, 25, or 100 posts then 'becoming a troll?' Also, just what constitutes a TROLL? Different political opinion? Different religious opinion? Different sense of humor?

                Slippery slope - - -

                Just my two cents worth.

I don't agree with the "don't post, you get deleted" idea. I've been on new boards before where I didn't post for months, but I read a lot. Many recent posts in the OTD probably brought this issue up, but I agree with Joe T, it's a slippery slope.

It's easy to get sucked in on some volatile posts, I just bit the tainted squid a few minutes ago on a thread that is now gone. I won't bite again though, and if we all don't, then maybe those kind of posts will die off

A troll is an individual who causes discord by using inflammatory language or causes discord by personal attacks, off topic posts and so forth. Not too hard to spot... Just go the the off-topic board.

A slight mod to orangecrate's description. A troll is an individual who intentionally causes discord, one way by using inflammatory language or causes discord through personal attacks, off topic posts and so forth; normally with the intent of derailing a thread or increasing reader angst. Few are trolls by accident.

I am a member of at least a dozen forums on which I have never posted. I would think it weird if they deleted me. There is no requirement to post to be a member, But, to have access to an Off-Topic forum, or other special areas, I think that might have some validity.

I too agree with this. It's overly apparent that several joined just to cause hate and discontent and have never posted outside of the OTD. If they had to participate a bit first, they'd have more skin in the game.

I agree with the original poster on the idea. The number? Some where in the 30 - 50 sounds good.

Deleting a member that never posts seems odd, un-needed process. IMHO

Kiwi - I left the OTHER board because of comments like this. Everyone has an opinion and can give it. The man gave his opinion and you have the right to disagree with it, but your comment could have been a bit less caustic. JMHO, this really doesn't help to get and keep new members. Take care.

You can lurk and read most posts without joining.

I guess I have never understood the thing of joining up, putting zip info and never having anything to say.. ever.
I will have to think on that and ponder the reasons for that.

Here are a few measures that could be taken to better control the Off-Topic Discussion Forum (OTF) in the future. We are always looking for ways to make the forum better, so here is your chance to vote...
Move the OTF to the Groups section (Option 1 above)
                                38.46%
                                20
Only allow access to the OTF after a member has posted 25 or more times (see Option 2 above)
                                23.08%
                                12
Charge a small annual fee for access to the OTF (see Option 3 above)
                                13.46%
                                7
Allow a member to be "voted off the island" by other members (Option 4 above)
                                15.38%
                                8
Get rid of the Off-Topic Forum altogether
                                17.31%
                                9
Leave it as it is! No changes are needed.
