I tried to do this with no success. When I go to load my avatar (90 pixels by 90 pixels), I get a message "Upload failed due to failure writing temporary file." Is this a problem on my PC or on your server?

I have seen this come up a few times. Make sure you are uploading a GIF or JPG. I think it is a problem with the vBulletin server, but I cannot confirm. Sometimes it is just a matter of trying a few minutes later to get it to upload correctly.

Still no luck - tried again tonight and still getting the same thing. The file is JPG. I even tried like JGDJR - waited several minutes and tried again - same thing. Guess I'll keep trying...

I haven't tried a different JPG yet, but I'd really like to keep the one I've used on other forums. (I tried to upload it as a thumbnail and got the same error message.)

I, too am unable to upload my avatar. I tried using Chrome and Firefox, but get the same "Upload failed due to failure writing temporary file" error as Taddpole.

It failed on me...until it magically did not. Not being a smart@ss. If you try it and it fails, try it a couple more times in a row. For no reason, it simply worked. I had tried two different browsers with no difference, but at some point, for no definable reason, it just worked.

Well, I tried again tonight with no luck. I know that the Admins are working on it, but there were a few good ideas that I thought I would try. First, I tried multiple times (15 to 20) with my regular browser (Firefox), then I tried with both Chrome and IE. What I did see different tonight was no error message. Instead, after I "browse" to select my file and click "open", the next dialog box (the one that previews the image and gives you a chance to either "save" or "cancel") simply disappears almost as quickly as it's displayed. The other nights, if I was quick, I was able to click inside the box to get it to stay - then I clicked "save" and got the error message. No matter how quick I was tonight, the last dialog box simply went away.

Says it's working, then it goes back to where I was at the begining.

Only problem I had was trying to load too big of an image and the only part which would fit in the box was the GL's windshield. Reloaded a smaller file and it worked fine.

You should try cropping or resizing your avatar to no more than 160 pixels X 160 pixels (square). Also, I have found that JPEGs (.jpg) work best.

I can't make it work also. Do you need a certain post count?

My avatar is 100x69 3K in size.

Not sure on the number of posts but doubt that is a consideration. Once I got mine resized to 160X160 pixels it went right in.

Cruiseman, the ones that I've been trying (three different ones) are all 90 pixels by 90 pixels in jpeg format. I just tried again (moments ago) - same thing. I browse to the file location (on my local drive), select the file, and click OK. Then I get a SAVE/CANCEL dialog box that previews the selected avatar. Unfortunately, this dialog box disappears very quickly, even without clicking SAVE or CANCEL. If I'm really quick, I can click SAVE before the dialog box disappears. Either way, it doesn't matter - I'm still stuck with the default avatar. Help?

Did y'all notice there is a radial button to click to "Show Avatar". That radial button can be found under User Settings > Account

This may or may not help.

TravelinLite - I think I saw the checkbox for "show avatar" early on, but I had forgotten about it. It was checked. I turned it off and "saved", then turned it back on and "saved" again (sometimes that sort of thing works). NO luck this time. Still get the same dialog box disappear after about 0.1875 seconds...

ChrisE - Good idea to reference browser and OS. In case I didn't mention it before, I'm using Firefox on a Win7 box (although I did try Chrome and IE previously with the same results).
