  • Lake Michigan

I'm planning a trip around Lake Michigan. Anyone been there? Any suggestions?

We did that a few years ago and it was amazing. We started in Milwaukee and rode the long way 'round to Traverse City (spent 4 days there) then rode down the east coast of the lake and back to Texas. We skipped Chicago. Traverse City is a must as is Mackinac and Mackinac Island.

Agree on the Mackinac bridge, don't miss that. Go all the way North in the upper peninsula to the locks, very interesting to see them. Watch for forest rats, they like to take bikers down & there are LOTS of them.

I live near the west shore in Wisconsin. We did it once years ago. Now we take the USS Badger Ferry from Manitowoc, Wi and ride around the top of Lake Michigan. Once we get across the Big Bridge, we tour the U.P. and then head back to Wisconsin.

We're in northwest Indiana and wanted to cut Chicago out of the loop. We rode up to Ludington, MI and took the SS Badger across to WI. From there, Door County, WI and on up to the UP, across the bridge and down the coast of MI. Traverse City is an expensive place to stay and the budget hotel rooms sell out quickly. Dont miss the trail of trees in MI. Sit back and enjoy the ride. Keep in mind, the weather can force the closing of "the bridge".

Try crossing the Mackinac bridge at sunrise on a sunny Sunday morning. It is no traffic, and a religious experience, do it north bound in number two lane if you can. Outstanding
