Alaska plans and a late-winter diversion.

I promised to update our Alaska trip planning progress so here is a summary:
    1. Dates are set. June 6-18
    2. All motel rooms are reserved.
    3. The Skagway to Haines ferry spot is reserved.
    4. My wife’s flights to and from Anchorage are booked. She is not fond of my Iron Butt pace and in the interest of saving time, she will fly to and from Alaska .
    5. The route is set. Via Cassiar, Skagway northbound. Ride the ANC-Fairbanks-Glenallen-Seward loop with wife. Returning on Alaska Highway. Right at 7000 miles.
    6. Plan to ride a Bun Burner 1500 northbound and Saddlesore 2000 southbound.

To some, this will seem like an excessively quick and tight schedule but past experience has taught me that riding Iron Butt in the north country requires a plan and the discipline to carry it out. Mistakes or poor plans up there can be very time consuming. Oh, and luck definitely plays into it.

I have bought Aerostich riding pants, an Olympia jacket, Gore Tex boots and a new helmet. All were needed to replace well-worn gear. I’m most excited to try the pants. All items are currently under evaluation to see how they perform.

I also bought a GoPro camera which will be an interesting device. If it turns out to be too much hassle, it likely won’t get used much. I hate complicated things that slow me down.

As as far as my Gold Wing, I added LED driving lights. They appear impressive but the weather has been so awful this spring that I have not been able to give anything much of a test. The Wing will get new tires prior to the AK trip; a car tire on the rear, of course!

Speaking of crappy weather, it was 11 days ago when our thermometer read -7 degrees. I told my wife we were leaving North Dakota and heading south. “How far,” she asked? I told her we would stop when we found 70 degrees. “Ok, give me 10 minutes,” she said. I loaded the Wing on a trailer and we were out of there within an hour. The next day, we were 800 miles south in awesome 75 degree weather. The riding was great around Pueblo, Colorado! Now we are back in good old ND where it is still winter. Will it ever end?

    Ride safe!
