    The Perfect Motorcycle

It's August and everybody (else) is out riding. Not me....but such is the life of a farmer.

Thousands of motorcycles rumbled through my area in western North Dakota on their way to and from Sturgis. Lucky dogs!

My August riding generally consists of occasional trips to get parts for our combines and other farm equipment. Sometimes, I have to get a bit inventive to find reasons to ride; such as the time one of our combines needed a new sickle....a 36' long sickle that was at a dealership 200 miles away. Aha! "I can do this with my Gold Wing", I realized. The key ingredient in my concocted plan was my home-built cargo trailer that would carry the load. But 36 feet of sickle? Yup, because the sickle came in three 12' pieces that could be lashed and duct taped on the flat top of the trailer. My plan worked like a charm and I enjoyed a quick 400 miler and numerous stares.

I have made many other parts runs over the years during harvest but they are usually not very fun. This is a hectic, nonstop time of year and fitting in a motorcycle ride means something is broke down and my 16 hour day just got even longer. My all night 1300 mile round trip emergency parts run to St. Paul and back in 19 hours allowed us to only miss 1/2 day of harvesting instead of waiting 4 days over a Labor Day weekend for delivery of the part. My motorcycle, and I, have to be ready to go anywhere, any time, and for that there is simply no better motorcycle than a Gold Wing.
